Our key to the Great Ocean Road Experience is timing how much you drive in one go and where to mix in the array of experiences in the region. Outdoor activities such as surfing, scuba diving and sea kayaking to arts, cultural and heritage attractions. Jumping out of the car to admire the stunning coastline on the Great Ocean Walk or timing the end of your day right to enjoy fine dining and local winemakers.
If your car does not have the various shades of sand found along the coast sprinkled throughout your vehicle by the end, we haven’t done our job properly.
There are some brilliant coastal villages through the trip, each offering differing qualities from surfing mecca’s to sleepy seaside ports still gathering fresh seafood from the bountiful sea at its doorstep. Lorne, where the bush meets the beach is lovely and there are just a couple of boutique accommodation options we like to use here. Stretching the legs for a view of some of the nearby waterfalls is well worth the stop, and a chance to take in Lorne’s spirited art scene
An absolute favourite is the historic village of Port Fairy. With terrific architecture, beautiful beaches and an assortment of restaurants, original pubs and cafes, this is the embodiment of an Australian seaside village. During the Whale watching season (May-Sep) we’ll advise you on some of the best places to see these magnificent creatures, but the surf beach at Port Fairy is a secret spot!
Enjoy the Great Ocean road, perhaps in the vehicle of your dreams?
