We love Port Douglas because it gets you away from the crowds that can form at some of the other centres trying to access the Great Barrier Reef. It’s the only place on Earth where two World Heritage listed jewels exist; the Great Barrier Reef and the rainforest of Daintree and Cape Tribulation. Refresh, restore and revitalise, in the aquamarine reef waters of the Coral Sea, the crystal creeks of Mossman Gorge, and the palm fringed golden sands of Port Douglas’ Four Mile Beach.
You’ll discover the breathtaking northern tropics of Australia through pristine Daintree Rainforest walks and safaris, diving and snorkelling the reef and sailing the waterways. Be inspired by the amazing array of nature and wildlife and glorious simplicity. The tropics are a feast for the senses; the sights, sounds and tastes.
To get a true local taste you’ll need to get down to the iconic Port Douglas Sunday Market. It’s steeped in tradition and all stallholders must grow, produce or make the goods they are selling. Located at the aptly named ‘Market Park’ on Wharf Street, the Port Douglas Sunday Market has delighted visitors and locals alike for years.
If you want to venture further afield and have a keen interest on local produce, the Mossman Markets are the place to be. Located under the canopy of the awe-inspiring rain trees and next to the historic St. David’s Anglican church, here you will meet the locals who have been farming and living in this region for generations. Purchase giant exotic fruits, vegetables and lush herbs and spices – all grown with the help of the tropics. Here, the earlybird catches the worm, so make sure you get here before midday every Saturday.
