The Kangaroo Island Farm Gate and Cellar Door Trail introduces you to producers and products at their source. It invites you to enjoy the rich fruits of Kangaroo Island producers’ labours in your own time in a natural unspoilt environment.
Kangaroo Island’s food and wine industry takes its lead from the clean green environment in which it thrives. Nature’s products as nature intended, or with a little help from a local, make for highly sought after fine gourmet foods and distinctive wines. All the local establishments are small. Quantity is not the concern. These small industries flourish because of the quality of their produce: free-range eggs, olive oil, native berry jams, smoked fish, sauces and marinades, regional yoghurts and cheeses, freshwater marron, breads and biscuits.
The sea also yields its bounty: oysters, prawns, crayfish, whiting, snapper and garfish. The food tunes into the seasons and nature, and much of this top quality produce is hard to find anywhere else. Since Kangaroo Island was declared a wine region in 2001, 30 growers now tend 200 hectares of vines and produce 18 homegrown labels.
Unwind on a long, empty road to quality local produce, some of it unique to Kangaroo Island. Enjoy the taste, the view and the hospitality.
